Love in the Sun

First night down, forever to go

Our first night was fine, and went without problems of any kind. Miss Roxie settled in like she owned the place. She has perfectly beautiful house manners. Goes to the door for "outside?" and goes to the door when she wants to explore the yard. She asks for treats in a deep musical voice that evokes the opera and takes the treat in a lady-like manner. Rocky, on the other hand, always thought we were asking to have our fingers removed when we gave him a treat.

Nine o'clock came and went and Rox was sleeping in her bed watching the door for Bob to come home from class. When he did, and he went up to bed, Rox came to me in the TV room and stayed until I went to bed. Obviously she thinks Bob and I should go to bed together, but she stayed up to keep me company.

With no fuss or fanfare, she went up with me, got into her own bed, accepted the quilt for a cover and was soon dreaming and doing some very delicate, feminine snoring. 6:30 AM brought some rolling in bed, some wake-up vocals and a demand for tummy rubs before she'd agree to set foot off her bed.

A little breakfast, a tour around the backyard then a special request for an additional walkie out the front door. Bob met some neighbors who commented on "the new dog" and made some congratulatory noises. We have a reputation in the 'hood as the dachshund folks.

Tummy full (she licked our plates after we ate - a habit I vowed to avoid with this dog, but Bob caved), she is now sleeping under the kitchen table in hopes someone else will eat breakfast and share again.

Today is a do-nothing day. Just rest, bond, explore the yard, bark at the neighbors and figure out which toys are hers. And I have to do something with her hair. She needs a shampoo and style in the worst way. Also a mani-pedi. Her nails look good, but need a trim. I'm hoping her good nature extends to prodding, washing, combing and fluffing. I'd hate to piss her off on her first full day here!

First pictures

Virginia is a long ways from Michigan. Riding in that car was so tiring........... The bed I've got here is nice, but they spelled my name wrong... it says "Rocky" on it. I do hope they're not under the impression that I'm a boy!

Gimme some lovin', Big Daddy! I need it, I crave it, I demand it! And some ear rubs, and some neck scratches too........ and I'll wash your glasses for free - I mean, for food..............

Home!

Home. Tired. Exhausted. Mentally wiped out. Emotionally drained. Need sleep!!!!

Roxie made the trip without any problems. Well, sort of. Will write later.

First order of business at new house: inspect it. Second order of business at new house: mark it with a big pile of poop. Third order of business: pull Bob around neighborhood. Fast.

Off to vet with bag of poop.

Next, a nap for Mom. 1140 miles round trip in three days, two nights.

Roxie's Buds

Here are Roxie's buds in VA.
Brother's Labradoodle and
Chase on the left,

KaCee in the middle, and BJ and
Chase on the right. KaCee had just been shaved before the picture.Chase is the object of Roxie's ear fetish.

Licking and cleaning, cleaning and licking. Makes one wonder just what ears taste like...... does ear wax have a sweet taste?

Oh, what am I thinking! Dachsies lick butts and have been known to eat poop - why would they care what ears taste like?!

Nooooo, I think Roxie was probably seducing Chase, and being the guy, he fell for the old "tickle their ears and they'll follow you anywhere" ploy....... Bob used to fall for it too, back in the day.

A Little Backstory on our Princess

I got an email today that reaffirms the good in mankind. And no, I'm not being dramatic. Roxie is coming to us from a foster home in Virginia, and before that she was at The House of Big Poodles. What ever did we do without the internet for instant communication?!

Right before Rox came to a rescue group she was with a wonderful family, The House of Poodles, who helped her, loved her and did that most selfless of all acts, gave her up for rescue. This family had "rescued" her from a first family. Her new rescue home was full of doggy life..... big life...... and I mean that literally. Roxie had 4 brothers and sisters - big Poodle Dogs and a Labbradoodle who straddled her! Seems her rescue home people fell head over heals in love, but with so many dogs they were tripping over little (and big) furry feet. And so Roxie began her journey to us.

As you know it almost killed my husband AND me to have to give Roxie up. The "big children", Chase(blond boy), BJ, (black girl) and KaCee, (resident "mixed terrier")(& all over 50 pounds) are constantly looking for Roxie. They've looked out in the yard, under the furniture and out the windows and doors. Should you dare to mention Roxie's name they stand still and give you that quizzical look as they slowly turn their head as if to say "so where is she?"

This picture (above) is what Roxie did everytime we tried to take a picture of her.

Chase, the blonde and Roxie were especially close. Roxie loved to get on top of him and lick his hears clean - first one and then the other and he would just lay there and enjoy it!!

And so now I know a little bit more about the girl who will be coming to live with us. She is a picture princess who loves to have her good side photographed and get belly rubs at the same time. She has an ear fetish and is a sucker for big blond men. Too bad Bob is a bald redhead... sigh.......

A Preview of Beauty - Love on the Way

A beauty is coming in one week. Just seven days....

It's been over 7 months since Rocky the Ball King died and we buried him in the backyard in his favorite quilt with all his balls. I wonder if the future owners of our home will appreciate the pet cemetery in the yard. I suppose not. Does this fall under the 'must disclose' clause in contract when selling?

Roxie has captured the hearts of many, and will surely share her adventures with her adoring public. I have a feeling she will be a prolific writer with opinions on many subjects. I do hope she has a sense of humor, as the world sure needs some laughs. Good pee-your-pants laughs... laughs where the soda-comes-out-your-nose guffaws raise your endorphin levels.

It is exactly seven days until I drive to VA to pick her up. Such anticipation is both difficult and exalting at the same time. I seem to have lost the confidence we had with all our other babies. One might think we never held a short long dog before. Will she like us? Will she enjoy the big fenced back yard, look forward to long walkies in the woods with Bob? Will I be able to groom her wirehair coat so she looks beautiful, and do it without hurting her?

So many years ago, in summer 2002, I was surfing the net and found Rocky's picture. I couldn't stop looking at him gazing up into Patti Phillips camera, his little airplane ears laid back in the wind. What ever could have been the key? How in the world do you fall in love with a picture? But you just do, and there is nothing to be done. You must have what you see. It's a cosmic karma cyber-connection that is instant and firm.

And so the same has happened again. With the grief of Rocky's death still firmly in mind, we are letting ourselves be pulled in. But between now and the inevitable, sweet joy and laughter will burst from our home. Roxie will become as well known in our world as Rocky was.

I'm smiling in anticipation of all the smiles she will bring to others. Life is about to get good again!
